Distance without a Difference

The Chicago Center for Psychoanalysis provides a course of study leading to certification in psychoanalysis for candidates who reside outside of greater Chicago but would be able to travel to the city several times a year for our weekend classes. Our program would be of particular interest to colleagues who live in areas where analytic training is not offered or where it might otherwise be difficult to attend a local program.

Unlike other programs, the distance option is not a separate course of study.  It is integrated with our onsite training.  All of our candidates train together regardless of whether they reside locally, nationally, or internationally. Our curriculum allows candidates to take courses on either a full or part-time basis.

We offer an analytic training program that is egalitarian, supportive, and welcoming, where clinicians develop analytic skills and practice from diverse perspectives and in which one’s identity as a psychoanalyst is developed.

Requirements for certification include:

    1. Completion of 30 intensive seminars offered during weekends
    2. Three years of clinical case seminars
    3. Two or three supervised analyses
    4. A personal analysis
    5. A final integrative graduation project
While we retain the essence of other analytic training programs, ours is unique is several ways.
  1. Not only do trainees work with our own diverse and seasoned faculty, but we also invite outstanding psychoanalysts from throughout the United States and from abroad to teach in their areas of expertise. Those invited are analysts whose writing and presentations are at the cutting edge of theory.
  2. The curriculum, which includes a sound grounding in fundamentals, is designed each academic year to include topical ideas taught by educators whose work is of interest to our current candidate group.  This affords candidates more latitude to individualize training based on their own clinical and theoretical interests. Building upon a classical foundation, our curriculum is open to the rich diversity of analytic thought.  We offer course work in contemporary approaches, such as object relations, self psychological, developmental and attachment theories, as well as relational, intersubjective, feminist, and Lacanian schools of thought.
  3.  Our program offers a high degree of flexibility.  Courses can be taken on a full or part-time basis.  There is also some flexibility in the number of seminars a candidate can select each year.
  4. Classes meet in small, weekend seminars, a format that encourages the development of an intimacy that enhances the learning process. Chicago is easy to access, culturally rich and diverse, and offers a wide range of available accommodations from hotels to apartments and house sharing.
  5. Candidates have flexibility to choose their analysts and supervisors from our impressive core and visiting faculties. Supervision can be conducted remotely. The flexibility of our program allows for balance between one’s work, education, and personal life.
  6. We offer rolling admissions.  Thus, an individual can apply at any time and enter upon acceptance.
